Five

Oh Lord.

Didn’t Alec just turn 3? Apparently not. He’s 5 today.

What the h*ll?

Eight years until he’s a teen?

Nine (if we’re lucky) until he experiments with drugs until he digs chicks?

Instead of faking him a birthday party like we did last year , we decided to give him a small party with a few of his friends.

He loved it. Julia went nuts (no surprise there).

Seems like an emotional milestone. He’s a big boy now. He has a chart. Has to earn stars to get things he wants v. us just giving stuff to him.

It; however, was a challenge to get him to want to earn stars for ‘stuff’ by doing chores etc. as he kept insisting he ‘didn’t want anything’.

What? How do we manipulate teach you that you must work hard for things in life if you claim you don’t really want anything?

I dragged him to the toy department at Target last week to see what would help ‘teach’ him.

He’s always been into Leapster games but ‘unfortunately’ he pretty much has them all. To age 12. So that didn’t work.

He finally saw this Batman game/toy thingy that he had to have.

Perfect. At least we found a non-computer-type-gadget gift for his birthday.

Anyway, he’s such a sweet kid that it’s hard not to give him stuff. But, we’re learning.

He’s five but life is just beginning.

Happy Birthday 'baby'.

It is amazing how quickly they grow up. I remember when he was born and it seems like just yesterday. Eeeeks, that makes me 5 year older too.

Give my sweetie a big kiss and hug from his Auntie and his gift is on it's way.

Loved this "story." A big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Alec. Good grief, he'll be graduating from high school shortly! His "I don't want anything" reminds me of when I read an article on how to get your kids to help. So, one night, I asked Kristi, who was 9 at the time, if it wouldn't be great if he set the table so it would be all ready when Dad got home. "No," she says, "I'm not hungry." KIDS - they outfox the parents all the time!!!!!

Alec is a boy after my own heart. He's learning that it's better to just hang out, play and be lazy rather than to have to "do" things he'd rather not for the reward of material items. Good for him! Happy Birthday, Alec!
